DRIVING LICENSE CLASS - B196

With the 14th Ordinance to Change the Driver's License - Ordinance of December 23, 2019, it is now possible to drive certain motorcycles with a car license under the following conditions.

The following prerequisites exist for expanding the license class B to the key number B196:

● Mindestalter 25 Jahre
● Mindestens 5 Jahre im Besitz der Fahrerlaubnis Klasse B

It is not possible to advance to class A2 after two years of training B196.

Theoretical lessons:

4 x class-specific material of 90 minutes each in the following topics

Driver / co-driver, vehicle
Special behavior when riding a motorcycle
Special difficulties and dangers
Driving technique and driving physics

Practical lessons:

5 x practical driving lessons of 90 minutes each (10 driving hours of 45 minutes each)

Of these:

2 hours of 45 minutes each on federal or rural roads are to be completed
2 hours of 45 minutes each on freeway
6 hours of 45 minutes each for hours and the basic driving tasks listed below

In the practical exercises, the following basic driving tasks must be learned and mastered in order to successfully complete the driver training:

Driving a slalom at walking pace
Braking with the greatest possible deceleration (emergency braking from 50 km/h)
Dodge without braking
Dodge after braking
Short slalom
Long slalom
Driving at walking pace straight
Stop and Go
Circular driving
Driving in lanes
Driving in bends
Driving on interurban roads (at least 90 minutes)
Driving on the motorway

If the training for class B196 has been successfully completed, you may:

The key number 196 allows the driving of motorcycles (also with sidecar) with a displacement of up to 125 ccm, an engine power of no more than 11 kW, for which the ratio of power to weight does not exceed 0.1 kW / kg.

This entry is only valid nationally, so it can only be driven in Germany!

After successfully completing the driver training, you will receive a certificate with which you can now have your driving license extended by the key number 196 with your competent authority.

Classes AM and L are included in this license class.

Fahrzeuge der Klasse B:

Motor vehicles (except motorcycles) with a gross vehicle weight of not more than 3.5 t and eight seats, except for the driver's seat. Trailers may be carried on vehicles with a permissible total weight of 3.5 t if the permissible total mass of the trailer does not exceed 750 kg. If the trailer has a permissible total mass of more than 750 kg, the permissible total mass of the combination must not exceed 3.5 t.

For other combinations, authorization B96 or class BE can be acquired.

Class AM vehicles:

Two-wheel mopeds with a spark ignition engine with a maximum displacement of 50 cm³, a design-related maximum speed of maximum 45 km/h or an electric motor with a maximum continuous rated output of 4 kW.

Three-wheel mopeds with a spark ignition engine with a maximum displacement of 50 cm³ and a maximum construction speed of 45 km/h or an electric motor with a maximum rated output of 4 kW.

Four-wheel light vehicles with a spark ignition engine with a maximum displacement of 50 cm³, a design-related maximum speed of maximum 45 km/h or an electric motor with a maximum continuous rated output of 4 kW and an empty weight of maximum 350 kg.

Class AM also entitles you to:

Small motorcycles with a maximum design speed of 50 km/h, provided they first entered traffic before January 1, 2002.

Small motorcycles according to former GDR law with a displacement of 50 cm³ and a maximum design speed of 60 km/h if they were put into operation for the first time before January 1st, 1991. Proof of insurance is required from the GDR.
