BASIC DRIVING EXERCISES FOR CARS

What basic driving exercises are there:

Above you see a table with the basic driving tasks that have to be completed in each test. The officially recognized expert chooses one of the first two and middle two tasks to be examined.

0 = must always be carried out

Assessment of the basic driving tasks
Each task may be repeated once.
The practical test is not passed if the applicant
• does not perform a basic driving task correctly even when repeating the exercise
• insufficiently observes the traffic and this results in a hazard
• one person, a vehicle or another object
• forces the driving instructor to intervene

1. Drive right backwards using a junction, intersection or driveway

Content of the basic driving exercise:
Drive backwards to the right in a tight curve, into a junction without driving onto the curb or crossing the road boundary. Stop the vehicle parallel to the curb or the lane boundary.
Procedure:
1. Decelerate, check that the intersection is clear - allow right of way
2. Decelerate to a standstill, blinking on the right. Watch subsequent traffic
3. Once everything has been secured, drive slowly backwards with the wheels turned to the right under sufficient observation
4. Turn right around the corner, continue to watch the traffic
5. Turn right as far as possible to the edge of the lane. Be careful not to hit the curb or the lane boundary
6. Park ready for parking
Error evaluation:
• Insufficient observation of traffic
• Driving onto the curb or crossing the lane boundary
• Not nearly stopped parallel to the curb or the lane boundary
• More than two correction moves

2.1. Reversing into a parking space (longitudinal installation)

Content of the basic driving exercise:

Drive backwards into an approximately 8 m long gap (e.g. between two vehicles in a row) and stop.

Procedure:

1. blink right, drive slowly past the selected parking space (check whether it is large enough)

2. Decelerate to a standstill. Keep parallel to the parked car. Watch subsequent traffic

3 + 4. Once everything has been secured, slowly drive backwards with the wheels turned to the right under sufficient observation

5. Make sure the car swings to the left. Therefore secure at the rear left and front

6. Steer back until you are parallel to the curb. Correct if necessary

7. Apply the handbrake, engage idle, let the engine run

Error evaluation:

• Insufficient observation of traffic

• Driving onto the curb or crossing the lane boundary

• Faulty end position (e.g. jamming other vehicles)

• Distance from the curb or from the road boundary more than 30 cm

• More than two correction moves

2.2. Drive backwards to the left into a parking space (longitudinal arrangement)

Contents of the basic driving exercise:

Park backwards in a one-way street between two vehicles in a row on the left-hand side of the lane.

Procedure:

1. blink left, slowly drive past the selected parking space (check whether it is large enough)

2. Decelerate to a standstill. Keep parallel to the parked car. Watch subsequent traffic

3 + 4. If everything is secured, slowly drive backwards with sufficient observation with the wheels turned to the left

5. Make sure the car swings to the right. Therefore secure right behind and front

6. Steer back until you are parallel to the curb. Correct if necessary

7. Apply the handbrake, engage idle, let the engine run

Error evaluation:

• Insufficient observation of traffic

• Driving onto the curb or crossing the lane boundary

• Faulty end position (e.g. jamming other vehicles)

• Distance from the curb or from the road boundary more than 30 cm

• More than two correction moves

3.1. Entering a parking space to the right (transverse or inclined position)

Contents of the basic driving exercise:

Reverse into a gap between two vehicles standing in parallel or on a parking area marked across or at an angle to the direction of travel and then stop.

Procedure:

1. blink right, drive slowly past the selected parking space (check whether it is large enough)

2. Decelerate to a stop, hold 2 to 3 cars after the gap. Watch subsequent traffic

3. Once everything has been secured, drive slowly backwards with the wheels turned to the right under sufficient observation

5. Make sure the car swings to the left. Therefore secure at the rear left and front

6. Make sure that you come past the right parked car

7. Steer back until you are at an angle of 90 ° to the curb. Correct if necessary

8. Apply the handbrake, engage idle, let the engine run

Error evaluation:

• Insufficient observation of traffic

• Not enough margin

• Vehicle outline protrudes beyond the marked parking area

• More than two correction moves

3.2. Entering a parking space to the left (transverse or inclined position)

Contents of the basic driving exercise:

Reverse into a gap between two vehicles standing in parallel or on a parking area marked across or at an angle to the direction of travel and then stop.

Procedure:

1. blink left, slowly drive past the selected parking space (check whether it is large enough)

2. Decelerate to a stop, hold 2 to 3 cars after the gap. Watch subsequent traffic

3. If everything is secured, drive slowly backwards with sufficient observation, with the wheels turned to the left

5. Make sure the car swings to the right. Therefore secure right behind and front.

6. Make sure that you come past the right parked car

7. Steer back until you are at an angle of 90 ° to the curb. Correct if necessary

8. Apply the handbrake, engage idle, let the engine run

Error evaluation:

• Insufficient observation of traffic

• Not enough margin

• Vehicle outline protrudes beyond the marked parking area

• More than two correction moves

3.3. Forward in a transverse position to the right

Contents of the basic driving exercise:

Drive forward into a gap between two vehicles standing in parallel or onto a parking area marked at right angles to the direction of travel and then stop.

Procedure:

1. blink right, slow down

2. Watch the following traffic, secure everything well. Turn the wheels slightly to the left to drive into a larger arc in the selected parking space

3. Continue to secure everything well, slowly countersteer

4. Turn left to drive into the parking space

5. Make sure that you pass the right and left parked cars

6. Steer back until you are at an angle of 90 ° to the curb. Correct if necessary. Apply the handbrake, engage idle, let the engine run

Error evaluation:

• Insufficient observation of traffic

• Not enough margin

• Vehicle outline protrudes beyond the marked parking area

• More than two correction moves

3.4. Forward in a transverse position to the left

Contents of the basic driving exercise:

Drive forward into a gap between two vehicles standing in parallel or onto a parking area marked at right angles to the direction of travel and then stop.

Procedure:

1. blink left, slow down

2. Watch the following traffic, secure everything well. Turn the wheels slightly to the right to drive into a larger arc in the selected parking space

3. Continue to secure everything well, slowly countersteer

4. Turn left to drive into the parking space

5. Make sure that you pass the right and left parked cars

6. Steer back until you are at an angle of 90 ° to the curb. Correct if necessary. Apply the handbrake, engage idle, let the engine run

Error evaluation:

• Insufficient observation of traffic

• Not enough margin

• Vehicle outline protrudes beyond the marked parking area

• More than two correction moves

3.5. Parking out of a gap between two vehicles (backwards)

Contents of the basic driving exercise:

Backwards to the left from a parking area marked perpendicular to the direction of travel.

Procedure:

1. flash right, secure everything. If necessary, use instructors

2. Drive slowly backwards. Possibly provide a view through the other panes. When you are level with the A pillar, turn left

3. Steer straight again, switch off the turn signal, engage 1st gear, look at your shoulders and drive off

Error evaluation:

• Insufficient observation of traffic

• Not enough margin

• Vehicle outline protrudes beyond the marked parking area

• More than two correction moves

4. Invert

Contents of the basic driving exercise:

Independent selection of a suitable place and method for reversing (e.g. parking or parking space, junction, property entrance).

Procedure:

1. Reduce speed, drive slowly past the turning point. Check whether it is a suitable position

2. Decelerate to a standstill, blinking on the right. Watch subsequent traffic

3. Once everything has been secured, drive slowly backwards with the wheels turned to the right under sufficient observation

4. Turn right into the turning option, continue to watch the traffic

5. Steer straight again, continue to secure everything

6. Blink left, watch out for pedestrians and cyclists. Slowly drive forward to the right and left, turn slightly to the left

7. Slowly steer back again. Shift into 2nd gear

Error evaluation:

• Insufficient observation of traffic

• Inadmissible deviation from the right-hand drive requirement

5. Braking with the greatest possible deceleration

Contents of the basic driving exercise:

The applicant must bring the car to a standstill by applying the service brake with the greatest possible deceleration from a speed of approx. 30 km/h. The task presupposes that the driving instructor ensures that there is no danger to the following traffic; therefore it is not necessary to observe the rear traffic (using the mirror and checking the blind spot) before starting braking. The instruction to carry out the braking is given by the driving instructor.

Procedure:

1. Announcement, the inspector says that he wants to test the emergency braking

2. DUT has to drive approx. 30 km/h, then the driving instructor gives the brake command

3. Full braking with the greatest possible deceleration, do not stall the engine

4. Starting again, blinking on the left, following traffic through the mirror, shoulder glance - everything is free -> continue

Error evaluation:

• Output speed too low

• No sudden application of the service brake

• Failure to achieve the necessary delay

• Significant deviation from the driving line due to incorrect steering

• Engine stalling

_______________
1) A correction train is the movement of the vehicle against the direction of travel of the task
